Walking Through the Historic Streets of the Ghetto

During the tour we will walk through the streets of the Jewish Ghetto – an area full of history and stories. The guide will explain:

The establishment of the Ghetto: In 1555 Pope Paul IV created the Ghetto and confined the Jews to a small walled area whose gates were closed every night.

The development of the community: How Jews lived for centuries inside the Ghetto, facing restrictions and overcrowding while maintaining rich religious, cultural, and communal life.

Important landmarks: Synagogues, squares, and fountains that reflect the blend of Jewish and Roman culture.

This is not just a walking tour – it is an experience that brings the history of the Ghetto to life.

Stop at the Memorial Plaques

We will visit memorial plaques commemorating the Jews of Rome who were deported during World War II following the Italian racial laws of 1938 and the German occupation in 1943. During this stop:

  • We will explain the meaning of the inscriptions on the plaques.

  • We will hear personal stories of the victims.

  • We will reflect on the importance of remembrance and education.

We will also learn about life in the Ghetto for nearly 300 years – daily life, the restrictions imposed on the Jewish community, and stories of survival from those who lived through the Holocaust.

Visit to Bet Chabad

At a certain point inside Bet Chabad, the Rabbi will give a short explanation about Judaism and a brief Hebrew prayer with a blessing for participants. The prayer is respectful and suitable for visitors of all backgrounds.

Tefillin (Optional Experience)

Men who wish may put on tefillin with guidance from the Rabbi or a trained volunteer. This experience includes:

  • An explanation of the meaning of tefillin

  • The central verses including the Shema

  • A glimpse into an important part of Jewish daily life

Kiddush and Light Refreshments

After the prayer, a small kosher refreshment will be served and we will say L’chaim together.
